This is a collection of works published in conjunction with "Drawing 2020," an exhibition of drawings depicting the "now" held by Gladstone Gallery in New York.
Edited by art historian Molly Nesbit.
Twenty years ago, in the summer of 2000, an exhibition titled "00" was held that surveyed drawings from the transition from the 20th to the 21st century.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of this ever-expanding exhibition, Drawing 2020 reexamines the medium as a lens through which artists are living and creating drawing at this critical historical moment, highlighting its continued importance, how it continues to spark a quiet revolution, and the differing interpretations of drawing by different artists.
Over the past two decades, and in the past few months, drawing has undergone a remarkable development and evolution as an artistic expression, responding to the physical, political and technological forces that influence our daily lives, particularly the expansion of digital consumption and the rise of social media.
More recently, the global pandemic has forced us to live in self-isolation and reexamine the issue of racism around the world, diversifying our perspectives, and these multifaceted concepts have irreversibly changed the way we see the world, each other, and art.
Nevertheless, the act of drawing, which provides a tactile connection between the artist's vision and the visualization of the world, has gone further and has not only retained its importance for decades, but continues to produce countless imaginative works.
The works featured in this exhibition are executed using a wide range of materials and techniques, both traditional and non-traditional, and demonstrate the intricacy and essential qualities that make drawings drawings within an expanded category.
