About the productJapanese

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Umegaoka Elegy" held at Taka Ishii Gallery in 2019.

From the press release:

Since the gallery opened in 1994, Araki's solo exhibition has been held almost every year for the quarter century, and this year marks his 27th.
This exhibition will feature approximately 90 new color and monochrome photographs taken on medium-format film.
Many of Araki's works are named after the city where he was born and raised, such as "Tokyo Nude" (1989), "Tokyo Story" (1989), and "Tokyo Comedy" (1997), but for the title of the work in this exhibition, Araki chose "Umegaoka," where he currently lives.
The subjects of the works, which were shot in and around his Umegaoaka home, are mostly dolls, statues, monster objects, flowers, and monochrome skies, but rhythmically interspersed with photographs of his wife Yoko and Robert Frank, who turned 95 this year, as well as notes recording the years of death of his late father and mother, and his two older brothers who died young.
Araki has captured the social climate at turning points in history in his works, such as when the era changed from Showa to Heisei and at the turn of the century in 2000, by "reproducing" with his camera the women who enjoyed those times, the events that took place at the time, and the changing cityscapes.
This year, as the era name changes to "Reiwa," Araki is focused on himself.
As his physical strength declines day by day and he increasingly refrains from going out, Araki becomes increasingly aware of the approaching death.
Having been present at the deaths of his father, mother, wife Yoko, and beloved cat Chiro by capturing them as subjects in his photographs, Araki's lens now turns towards himself. In the course of his days, he dispassionately photographs what he wants to photograph and what he has become accustomed to photographing - the accumulation of photographs presented as is leaves the interpretation up to the viewer.
Don't miss this opportunity to see the latest work by this photographer who turns 79 this year and whose camera has become everything.
