A Magazine Curated By is pleased to welcome Grace Wales Bonner, the Jamaican-British designer who founded her own London-based fashion label, Wales Bonner, in 2014, as guest curator for its 22nd issue.
From her debut collection, "Ebonics" in Fall/Winter 2015, to her latest collection, "Volta Jazz" in Spring/Summer 2022, Grace has explored the superiority and myths of "Blackness" on earth, weaving the cultural contexts they carry into her designs.
Wales Bonner's collections, presentations and other expressions encompass diverse identities and capture their expressions of beauty.
Now positioned at the forefront of the fashion industry, her aesthetic attempts to combine tailoring techniques with casual street attire and the gestures of the people who wear them.
Titled "Rhapsody In The Street," this issue is the 22nd in the "A Magazine Curated by" series, in which designer Grace Wales Bonner pairs archival and historical documents with newly commissioned essays, paintings, and portraits in response to the traditions of 20th century black poetry, literature, and portrait photography.
The combination of matte and glossy paper with gold-plated edges makes it a beautiful book objet d'art.
Additionally, this issue includes a random print from Cameroonian photographer Samuel Fosso's "Autoportraits II" series inserted inside the magazine.
The book features a visual portfolio shot in Los Angeles, London, Miami, Paris and New York, ranging from Ming Smith's self-portraits, Steven Traylor's cinematic story of musician Damian Marley, Zoe Ghertner's story capturing the essence of African fashion model Selena Forrest, Paul Mpagi Sepuya's studio work and Tyler Mitchell's retrospective of British fashion label Wales Bonner's debut Spring/Summer 2017 collection, "Ezekiel."
Other highlights include a conversation about Jamaican dancehall traditions, an essay on the Harlem, New York City photography collective Kamoinge, an archive of unreleased film photography from Ghana, paintings and poetry by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, John Goto's classic "Lovers' Rock" series, new poetry by Roger Robinson, and a congratulatory opening and closing message from Nigerian novelist and poet Ben Okri.
