A collection of works by American artist Richard Serra.
It was published in conjunction with exhibitions held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from April to August 2011 and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) from November 2011 to January 2012.
His sculptures have been the centrepiece of numerous important exhibitions and have received worldwide acclaim.
However, even those who are impressed by his monumental sculptures, backed by rigorous intellectual thought, may not be aware that his drawings are just as fascinating as his sculptures.
This first volume of his drawings explores the evolution of his drawing as a medium that is both separate and linked to his pioneering sculpture.
The artist originally used ink, charcoal and lithographic crayon drawings as a means to explore the relationship of form and perception between sculpture and the viewer.
Over time, the drawings have changed significantly in concept, material, and scale, growing into autonomous works that embody the artist's worldview.
In his large-scale installation work, "Installation Drawings," the bold, stately shapes drawn with paint sticks are calculated to destroy and complement the existing space, ultimately dominating the entire space.
In the late 1980s, the artist began to express the tension of weight and gravity through layering of colors.
In his recent works, which focus on surface effects, he uses mesh screens as a medium to translate the movement of his hand into paint on paper.
The book is co-authored by Los Angeles-based filmmaker and writer Lizzie Borden; Magdalena Dabrowski, special consultant in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Gary Garrels, Ellis S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Bernice Rose, chief curator at the Menil Drawing Institute & Study Center; Richard Shiff, Effie Marie Kane Chair in the Department of Art and director of the Center for Modernist Studies at the University of Texas at Austin; and Michelle White, associate curator at the Menil Collection.
