Vermeer, a master of 17th century Dutch painting, is known as the magician of light. His enigmatic paintings, full of tranquility, are said to number just 35 in existence, and their rarity has made them popular worldwide.
Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin, Paris, London, Dublin, New York, Washington... The trip took about three weeks, visiting 17 museums in seven countries by plane and train. Uemoto faced each of Vermeer's paintings, which he had never seen before, and continued to record Vermeer on film and in notebooks, sometimes with a pen in hand, while pondering the composition, motif, paint and brush strokes, and the painter's thoughts and breath, through his lens and sometimes with a pen in hand.
Nearly 400 years after the painting was created, Uemoto records the museums that house Vermeer's works, the towns they are in, and the rooms in which they are displayed, across borders and oceans. He also records the people who view the works and their gazes. This is a new art book that, through the photographer's eyes and personal words, allows you to travel to 17 museums in seven countries around the world and experience viewing Vermeer's paintings in those places.
