This is the official catalog for the exhibition "Super National Treasures - The Brilliance of Prayer" to be held at Nara National Museum in 2025.


Nara National Museum (Narahaku) opened on April 29, 1895 (Meiji 28) (at the time it was the Imperial Museum of Nara), and will celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2025. To commemorate this, the Nara National Museum will be holding a large-scale exhibition of national treasures, the largest of its kind to date.

The exhibition title is "Super National Treasures - The Brilliance of Prayer". The sculptures that represent the prayers of gods and Buddhas are imbued with the deep feelings of our ancestors who created them, protected them, and passed them down. Among them, "national treasures" are widely known as national treasures that represent our history and culture.

The term "Super National Treasure" not only refers to such exceptionally superior treasures, but also conveys the idea that the prayers handed down from our ancestors through the ages and the hearts of the people who carry on this country's culture are also irreplaceable treasures.

This special exhibition will introduce a number of masterpieces that Japan can be proud of around the world, including important works that could be called future national treasures, with a focus on national treasures deeply connected to the Nara Museum and the history of Nara. 143 pieces of Buddhist and Shinto art, including 112 national treasures and 16 important cultural properties, will be on display.

The cover of the catalogue features the Horyuji Temple's National Treasure "Standing Kannon Bodhisattva (Paekche Kannon)," and the back cover features the Chuguji Temple's National Treasure "Half-seated Bodhisattva (said to be Nyoirin Kannon)." All the works on display are introduced in color. With a wealth of enlarged images, you can take your time to appreciate the ultimate beauty of Buddhist and Shinto art. This must-read book also includes commentary on the works on display, an introduction to Nara's shrines and temples, a timeline showing the 130-year history of the Nara Museum, and essays.
