The newest Shuntaro Tanikawa
While I was becoming tired of the flood of words inundating the media, I unexpectedly came up with a series of short poems that were based on ideas that were somewhat fresh to me.
--From the afterword
Even now at the age of 83, Tanigawa continues to take on new challenges. A poet who has been writing at the forefront for over half a century, his latest work features 37 poems, all of which feature various references to "I" and "you."
A book like a work of art
When I first read the manuscript, I struggled with how to express the movement, distance, and closeness of these words in the material form of a book.
As a result, I came to the conclusion that what is most important is the paper on which the words in front of you are written.
I'm happy to finally be able to put it at your fingertips.
--From the bookmark inserted in the book, by Naoko Nakui, book designer
The design, which is like a work of art and goes beyond conventional book design, was created by up-and-coming book designer Naoko Naku.
Based on the concept that "the most important thing is the paper on which you carry the words in front of you" (Naku), the production of this book began with making "special paper just for this book."
With the cooperation of Ishikawa Paper Co., Ltd., known for its traditional high-quality Echizen washi paper, a vibrant blue paper with a soft texture was created.
This is truly a luxurious book born from Japanese craftsmanship.
Paper manufacturing: Ishikawa Paper Co., Ltd.
Printed by: Chuo Seiban Printing Co., Ltd.
Bookbinding and processing: Shinohara Shiko Co., Ltd., Matsutakesha Co., Ltd., Cosmotec Co., Ltd.
Therefore, a poetry collection that reaches a reader's hands is not merely a tool to carry the poems inside, but can also be considered a work of art.
Surely the ideal poetry collection is one that is comfortable to hold in your hand, that you can open to the pages without being distracted by unnecessary things, that can withstand repeated reading, and that makes you want to do so again and again.
I hope that people will feel that this collection of poems is not a book that serves to decorate the poems inside, but rather a vessel through which to present the poems with bare hands.
