In 2024, Matsuyama Tomoichi's latest series, unveiled in Venice and later titled First Last, shocked the art world.
The culture and history of the East and West, past and present, are fused on one screen like a crossroads, providing the viewer with a dramatic viewing experience, and the work depicts the reality of modern society with overwhelming technique. The unique worldview, along with its large scale, gives the viewer a sense of immersion, and has garnered wide support, especially from young people.
This book will be published in conjunction with the "Tomokazu Matsuyama Exhibition FIRST LAST supported by UNIMAT GROUP," which will be held from March 2025. The artist's first large-scale solo exhibition in Tokyo will feature approximately 40 pieces, including large-scale paintings that will be shown in Japan for the first time, as well as video works, installations, and outdoor sculptures.
This book introduces over 100 detailed illustrations in full color, from his major recent works to his latest series, "First Last," which is also the title of the exhibition. It also includes an essay by art critic Akira Tatehata, a conversation with ISSEY MIYAKE designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae, and story explanations of his major works, making it a comprehensive book covering the current state of Tomokazu Matsuyama's activities.
