[Comment from Shuntaro Tanikawa on the obi]
"I was an only child, but I had the best brother in the world of poetry."

[About this book]
Did you know that there is an American who has been translating the poetry of Shuntaro Tanikawa into English for over 50 years since the 1960s? His name is William I. Elliott. He was born in 1931, the same year as Shuntaro Tanikawa, and is 90 years old this year.
This book is the product of their friendship and history.

Eliot has selected 25 of the hundreds of poems by Shuntaro Tanikawa that he has translated to date, and has written newly written, sometimes humorous, explanations on "how to appreciate the poetry" along with the English translations.
At the end of the book, the author describes his journey spanning more than half a century, from his first encounter with Tanigawa's works to his memories of working with Kawamura Kazuo, with whom he translated poetry.

This book was translated from the original English manuscript written by Eliot by Katsumasa Nishihara, with whom he is currently working on translating the poems into English.
