Sofia Coppola's works
This is a collection of works by Sofia Coppola, an American film director, producer, screenwriter, actress, and fashion designer. It was published to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of her first feature film, "The Virgin Suicides" (1999).
To film the film, Lisbon invited British fashion photographer Corinne Day to join the shoot. Known for capturing iconic 1990s models in raw, disheveled and unadorned images, the two were like rivals in their portrayal of feminine beauty. Day's photographs perfectly echoed Lisbon's debut novel, which portrayed uninfluenced, unvarnished women that resonated with women. Edited by Lisbon using the original negatives from Day's shoots, this book offers a fascinating and unprecedented insight into the enigmatic world of the Lisbon sisters and their suburban trappings.
Corinne Day's photographs capture the lush, rich mystique of her sets in the way her young actors are portrayed in and between takes. Their natural postures and pensive expressions reflect the intimate working relationship and environment of their time on set. Fragments of set and costume design appear suggestively: a crucifix, pink lace underwear, a homecoming dress, beauty products, and taffy apples, all of which play key roles in the artist's depiction of "adolescent longing and repression."
The book also includes an original text by the author and the film's original author, Jeffrey Eugenides, that is sure to be an engrossing dialogue between Eugenides' original work and this cult-like film adaptation.
For her first feature film, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola commissioned British fashion photographer Corinne Day to join her on set. Renowned for her unadorned, grungy photographs of iconic models of the 1990s, Day's representation of female beauty met its match in Coppola, whose debut marked the first of her unaffected, empathetic metaphors of womanhood. Edited from Day's original negatives, this volume, which launches alongside The Virgin Suicides' twenty-fifth anniversary, gives mesmerising and unprecedented insight into Coppola's enigmatic staging of the Lisbon sisters and their suburban trappings.
In Day's photographs, the lush mystique of Coppola's set runs through images of the young actors at work and between takes, their candid posturing and pensive expressions reflecting the intimate and collaborative environment of the shoot. Fragments of the set and costume design appear suggestively – crucifixes, pink lace bras, homecoming dresses, beauty products, and toffee apples – all playing their part in Coppola's representation of the yearning and repression of adolescence. Completed with new texts by Sofia Coppola and Jeffrey Eugenides, this volume opens a fascinating dialogue between Eugenides's original text and Coppola's cult adaptation.
