About the productJapanese

In 1801, Francisco Goya claimed that "time also paints." Over 200 years later, this now proverbial statement could refer to the way time changes how we relate to art. A more conceptual interpretation would be to use time as a medium in itself. If we take this latter approach, no artist has understood this concept better than Alexander Calder.

The book explores time as an expressive medium that is an essential element of Calder's kinetic sculptures, and as an external factor to the grand developments of the 20th century, best exemplified in his early "spherique" series and his "Constellation" series, made from wood and wire during World War II when sheet metal was unavailable. By introducing movement into a static art form, Calder evoked the passage of time.

Featuring a wealth of archival photographs of Calder's studio and works spanning the 1930s through to the 1970s, this diverse selection of works from Calder's most prolific period highlights the role of time in his groundbreaking sculptural practice.
