About the productJapanese

A collection of works by American photographer William Eggleston. This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the David Zwirner gallery in New York from November to December 2022. This book contains approximately 100 unpublished works taken by the pioneer of color photography from the 1960s to the 1970s.

Photographed between 1969 and 1974, The Outlands is a series that established the innovative visual theme and visual vocabulary that the artist would continue to develop for decades to come. Through his lens, the vivid colors and deep nostalgia of his journey through the mythical yet ever-evolving American South resonate in breathtaking detail. His motifs of signs, cars, and roadside scenes have become iconic American landscapes and have influenced generations of photographers. From his wood-paneled station wagon with its doors wide open to his grandma in the melancholic interior of her home in Sumner, Mississippi, this series is a thorough selection of unforgettable images that epitomize the artist's dynamic and experimental practice. The diversity of his work reinvigorates his distinctive landscape photography and creates new perspectives on the changing American South.

Accompanying the 90 vibrant, meticulously rendered Kodachrome images is a fictional story by American author Rachel Kushner about hitchhikers in the American Deep South. Modern art and photography historian Robert Slifkin reconsiders the art historical significance of Kushner's work, drawing parallels with the works of Marcel Duchamp, Dan Graham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Smithson. A foreword by William Eggleston III offers important insights into the process of selecting and arranging the images in the series.
