This is the debut work of photographer Kei Ono, who has been taking portraits of high school students all over Japan for over 20 years since 2002. The artist won the Visual Photo Award Grand Prize in 2006 for this work. The following is an excerpt from the artist's website:

"We are looking for high school students who would like to take photos.
If you are interested, please feel free to contact us by email."
Models were recruited by distributing flyers and placing advertisements in magazines.
I continued to keep in contact with the high school students who applied through email.
“I come face to face with these people who want to be in front of the lens.
There is always someone out there who wants you to discover them.
We sought to achieve this through the medium of photography."
I can't take my eyes off the portrait with its straight eyes, which overlaps with my own image as a high school student.
