Set against the sci-fi backdrop of an empty, LED-lit arena, photographer Drew Brown's new book, AIRGAP, captures the cold, intimate world of ice hockey as players take turns playing, watching, and resting on the ice.

Helmets crashing against the boards to form a scrum, wet air blowing against plexiglass, players' faces cut in shadow as they enter the penalty box. Outside the rink, players move their bodies to improve and rebuild their performance, while some disappear into a tube of frozen smoke to recover, others strain on training bikes, their breathing digitized by a machine. Combining ice hockey with hallucinatory space travel, the film invites viewers into a realm where humans and technology merge beneath a grid of electric lights.
