A collection of works by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe. Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1933, Hosoe is known as one of the most influential photographers in the history of postwar Japanese photography. Published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition at the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts from July to December 2021, this photobook was published in collaboration with internationally renowned curator and researcher Yasufumi Nakamori (Senior Curator of Photography, International Art, Tate Gallery). It is the most important resource on Eikoh Hosoe.
Hosoe began his career in the mid-1950s and has always been at the forefront of Japanese photography, as an artist who dynamically handles images, as a curator who introduced the work of many Western photographers to Japan, and as a mentor who developed the careers of many famous photographers, including Daido Moriyama.
In 1959, he co-founded the photography collective VIVO with Shomei Tomatsu and Kikuji Kawada. Later, in 1974, he co-founded the WORKSHOP Photography School and participated as a lecturer. In addition to his work as an artist, he also worked as an educator, creating university education curricula and building up an amazing collection of photographs. In the process, he led the establishment of Japan's postwar photography world, and within the existing art forms of documentary and realism, he found new points of contact between photography and art, literature, performance, and film.
This collection of works, which summarizes Eikoh Hosoe's work to date, introduces not only his major series but also portraits of writers, critics, dancers, and artists. In addition, two essays that provide new perspectives on his work and seminal texts about Eikoh Hosoe by writers and critics, including Yukio Mishima and Shuzo Takiguchi, are reprinted. This book is a comprehensive introduction to Eikoh Hosoe's wide-ranging work, and also introduces important artists in the fields of postwar Japanese art, photography, dance, and literature.
