Ryu Ika, originally from Inner Mongolia, China, won the Grand Prix at the 21st "1_WALL" Photography Competition in 2019, and held a solo exhibition, "The Second Seeing," the following year. His bold installation, using photographic prints and monitors, was filled with image associations and rhythms that went beyond the various locations and subjects themselves, and likened the entire space to a theater, sharply questioning the viewer's position within the gazes that fill that world.
This book develops from that exhibition, inviting the viewer into the theatre of the book.
With each turn of the pages, which have a feel similar to that of a manga book, you will see a variety of characters, with a mixture of humor and incongruity. You will see inverted fronts and backs, layers, and deviations from them. Then, you will be suddenly exposed to the pressure of a face that is thrust in front of you, and you will not be able to escape its gaze. At times, the characters look at each other as the pages unfold, they are printed and folded, their eyes are closed, or they are reconstructed like organs.
