The photographs in It Was Once My Universe were made between December 16, 2018 and January 5, 2019, when Marie Tomanová returned to her family farm in South Moravia, Czech Republic, for the first time in over eight years. It was not her choice to be away from home for so long, but she could not return, and being away was painful for her.
Having moved to the US in 2011, Tomanova began using photography as a way to combat the sense of placelessness she felt living there: during her time away, she felt like she had become an outsider, yet still belonged, both in her hometown and in New York.
