About the productJapanese

"I will paint a picture of this planet with the paints of this planet."

Masato Kobayashi is one of the leading contemporary artists in Japan. His first collection of works, spanning over 320 pages, covers his work from 1985 to the present, some 40 years in the making.
After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1984, he set up a studio in Kunitachi, Tokyo and started his career. In 1996, he moved his base of operations to Ghent, Belgium, where he established his own unique techniques, such as the production of large-scale floor-standing paintings. Through his 10 years of work in Europe, Kobayashi gained the sense of perceiving everything that unfolds before his eyes as the "scenery of this planet." In 2007, he returned to Japan and built a studio in Tomonoura, Hiroshima Prefecture, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, where he continues to create energetically to this day. This book is divided into three chapters: his time in Kunitachi, Tokyo (1985-1996), his time in Ghent, Belgium (1996-2007), and his time in Tomonoura, Hiroshima (2007-), and is structured to interpret the world of Masato Kobayashi that unfolds from his works through his works from each period, exhibition and studio scenes, and the artist's words and explanations. The contribution "Masato Kobayashi Theory" by Kenjiro Hosaka, Director of the Shiga Prefectural Museum of Art, is also a must-read. This is a rare book that allows you to enjoy the intensity and warmth of an artist who continues to explore the nature of painting through his own unique concepts and methods.
