I think photography is (Woah! What am I saying?!) a truly mysterious thing. I try not to believe everything in a photograph because it's all a lie, but I do believe that the "fact" between the subject and the photographer (or the person who set up the camera) does indeed exist. This "fact" is different from the intimacy of a needle or paintbrush that is so close to the body, but more like a feeling of being pushed away, of loneliness and solitude, like two bodies that can never become one no matter how much they embrace. What is this "fact"? It is there when the film is developed and printed, and in the digital data. I feel there is a reason in the camera, and in the time and process, and sometimes in the process that must go through other people. And the more these are layered, the stronger the "fact" becomes. It gives the feeling that "we were really there." I think that's why I photographed my friends and used them as material for my photographic works and objects in "Bystander." - Katayama Mari, from the afterword
