About the productJapanese

A collection of works by British photographer Rosie Marks.

Renowned for restoring historic buildings, the Belmond Luxury Hotel Group is currently collaborating with some of the world's leading contemporary photographers to create destination-specific portfolios, carefully pairing each artist with the personality of the selected hotel. This book brings together images shot by Rosie Marks of the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town in Spring 2023 and Winter 2024.

Marks was inspired by the Mount Nelson Hotel's trademark pink walls during a childhood trip to South Africa with her family, and now, years later, she photographs its rooms, grounds and people with nostalgia, personal connection and her signature down-home humour.

She was particularly drawn to Mount Nelson's employees; their portraits offer a glimpse into their daily lives; they've worked at the hotel for decades, and as they gaze proudly at us from their windows and offices. Morning briefings often conclude with communal prayer and song, an important mark of the start of the day, and Marks says she was fascinated by the rhythm of administrative work, which overlaps with ritual and community. Her photographs reveal what she finds interesting, unusual and unique, and capture the human quirks we often overlook.
