A collection of works by Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp, whose exhibition is being held at the Artizon Museum from March 1st (Sat) to June 1st (Sun) 2025. This was published in conjunction with her exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York from November 2021 to March 2022.
This is the artist's first exhibition in the United States in nearly 40 years, and is a comprehensive introduction to his diverse body of abstract expressionist work. His career as a professor of applied arts, dancer, puppet maker, artist, and editor, his involvement with the Zurich Dada movement, and his projects in architectural space have all been essential in developing the visual language of his highly versatile and vibrant abstract works. Through his own work and collaborations with various industries, he blurs the historically constructed boundaries between craft, design, and art.
This book explores the artist's multidisciplinary approach to abstraction and features approximately 300 works from over 50 public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including textiles, beadwork, colorful marionettes, architecture and interior design, stained glass, works on paper, paintings, and relief sculptures. In addition, the book features 15 essays arranged in six sections, following the exhibition structure, and thematically and chronologically tracing the artist's work. The book also includes an illustrated exhibition chronology, the artist's first essays on materials and techniques, and a list of exhibits based on new research and analysis. The book offers a glimpse into the breadth of the artist's work.
Prior to the exhibition at the museum, an exhibition was held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in the artist's hometown of Switzerland, and the exhibition at Tate Modern in London was the artist's first retrospective in the UK.
