This is a collection of works by Australian artist Ron Mueck, known for his hyperrealist sculptures, who is also known for his permanent work "Standing Woman" at the Towada Art Center (Aomori Prefecture) and is one of the participating artists of "Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival 2025" scheduled to be held from April 2025. It was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain from June to November 2023.
The artist works slowly, with time itself being a key element in his creative process. His sculptural figures are painstakingly crafted down to the last detail, but there is a surprising shift in scale in his work, far removed from academic realism, pop art and hyper-realism.
Since garnering worldwide attention with his Dead Dad (1996–1997), a 2/3 scale silicone mixed media sculpture of the corpse of his father, Victor Willing, the artist has made a name for himself through his meticulous depictions of his subjects. Although his sculptures are breathtakingly realistic, as mentioned above, he deviates from realism in terms of scale, always choosing smaller than life-size or monumental scales.
Published to coincide with the exhibition, this collection of works is an expanded edition of the catalogue raisonné published in 2013, which covered the artist's work over the past 20 years. This comprehensive compilation presents all of the sculptures he has produced over the past 30 years since 1996 through a wealth of illustrations and previously unpublished materials, revealing the artist's fragile and ephemeral portraits of humanity, full of pathos and "realism." The inclusion of notebooks, studio photographs, preparatory drawings, and photographs of models allows us to witness the creative process and understand the intimacy of the works.
Texts by researcher and curator Justin Paton, art historian and curator Robert Rosenblum, scholar and curator Robert Storr, and philosopher Peter Sloterdijk explore the key themes that underlie the art these artists create.
Written in both English and French, the book was designed by Atelier Dyakova, a firm run by graphic designer Sonya Dyakova.
