About the productJapanese

A new past
Filled with the presence of people who lived together with diverse ethnic groups. The memories and records of the land that began as two imperial capitals, connected by stones and water.
The Asuka and Fujiwara region, which stretches across the center of Nara Prefecture, was home to two imperial capitals, Asuka-kyo and Fujiwara-kyo, for approximately 100 years from the end of the 6th century to the beginning of the 8th century, and is the place where the foundations of the nation were built.

Photographer Ishikawa Naoki made repeated visits to this area over a two-year period, sometimes venturing deep into the mountains as he took photographs, listening closely to the breathing of ancient people and getting closer to the depths of their activities that continue to this day.

While tracing the major historical sites associated with the imperial capital, Ishikawa's focus is on the mysterious stones that remain throughout the town, the abundant water sources, and local rituals.

This book is a story of the great historical flow of the transition from the Kofun period to a centralized state with the emperor at its center, and of ordinary people who lived while intermingling with a diverse range of ethnic groups. What is the "new past" that Ishikawa, who travels between the two, encounters?

The book comes with a map and timeline (printed separately) that will make you want to walk around the area using the photographs as a guide.
