The subject of this work is the eggs of the tardigrade Paramacrobiotus kenianus, one of the more than 1,200 species of tardigrades that are said to exist.
Tardigrades need moisture to live, but when the environment around them dries out, they dry out their bodies and enter a state of suspended animation known as "dry sleep."
They can survive in a xeroxic state for years and can withstand vacuum, high pressure, extreme radiation, and extreme heat and cold.
