A collection of works by Swedish photographer Lars Tunbjörk. This book is a reprint of his representative photo book "OFFICE" published in 2001, and has been newly published in a slipcase along with unpublished works.
This new edition by the legendary photographer, who sadly passed away in 2015, also includes his short, unpublished series, LA Office, which he completed in the final years of his life. Published at the beginning of the 21st century, this iconic body of work delves with masochistic delight into the bureaucracy, disorder and mediocrity of office culture, capturing with unparalleled insight into the soul-depleting environment of corporate space.
For The New Yorker, the author spent five years exploring offices in Stockholm, New York and Tokyo, taking “alien-like” photographs of lifeless, mundane and standard workplaces, attempting to capture the sadness that refuses to disappear in what he calls “the most common, yet closed and secretive, place in the Western world.” The winds of change may have traded grey cubicles for WeWork couches and clunky dial-up PCs for sleek, pocket-sized touchscreen tablets, but the images in The New Yorker capture a contingent sense of ennui and loneliness that still seems prescient in an age of absurd jobs, quiet retirement and working from home.
The two-volume set, designed by designer and art director Greger Ulf Nilsson, a close collaborator of the artist, reconstructs the 2001 edition and offers a new perspective with an additional volume of previously unpublished work. The book was produced in collaboration with the Lars Tunbjörk Foundation.
Tunbj?rk's iconic 2001 photobook of corporate melancholy is re-published in a luxurious slipcased edition, alongside an exclusive, unreleased series.
Loose Joints is honored to announce the posthumous re-publication of Office by legendary Swedish photographer Lars Tunbj?rk, alongside the release of LA Office ? an unpublished series completed shortly before his passing. Tunbj?rk's iconic series from the turn of the 21st century delves into the bureaucracy, disorder, and mundanity of office culture with masochistic delight, capturing the soul-sapping environments of corporate spaces with unparalleled insight.
Over five years, Tunbj?rk explored offices across Stockholm, New York, and Tokyo, photographing 'like an alien' in the soulless, banal uniformity of these workplaces. He sought to capture that lingering sadness in what he called "the most common ? but closed and secretive ? place in the Western world." While the winds of change may have transformed the gray dividers into WeWork couches or the clunky dialup PC into a sleek, pocketable touchscreen tablet, Tunbj?rk's images capture a contingent sense of ennui and isolation still prescient in an era of bullshit jobs, quiet quitting and working from home.
This two-volume series is redesigned by Tunbj?rk's close collaborator, graphic designer and art director Greger Ulf Nilsson. Nilsson reworks his original 2001 design of Office, presenting a fresh perspective alongside a separate book of unseen works in LA Office, both housed in a slipcase. The book is published in collaboration with Lars Tunbj?rk Foundation.
