In response to the question, "What brought about the modernization of the Kyoto art world?" previous research has argued that Takeuchi Seihō's trip to Europe (to inspect the Paris World's Fair in 1900) was a significant turning point.
This book makes full use of related materials such as sketches for dyed textiles for export held by the Takashimaya Historical Museum to reconstruct the activities that Seihō undertook at the Takashimaya studio before he traveled to Europe, and makes clear that it was the practice of creating sketches in the studio that evolved Seihō's style and led to the modernization of the Kyoto art world.

Takeuchi Seihō is often described with words like "master" and "genius," but this book focuses on the younger Seihō, before he became a "master," struggling and searching for his own path.
At a time when some Japanese painters felt ashamed to take part in the creation of preliminary sketches, Seihō repeatedly experimented in his small studio at Takashimaya in pursuit of "new Japanese painting." Seihō's flexibility in eagerly incorporating elements from the West while preserving the important elements of Japanese painting not only allowed his own work to mature, but also led to the achievements of his highly individualistic disciples, advancing the modern Kyoto art world.
The author, who has followed Seiho for 40 years as a museum curator and university professor, has painstakingly researched materials to construct a completely new image of Seiho. It is also interesting to read the story of the friendship between Seiho and Iida Shinshichi, a member of the Takashimaya founding family.
