Colorado-based British photographer Tim Richmond specializes in long-term documentary projects, and in The Bristol Channel, he weaves together the lives of people who have suffered through decades of austerity, food poverty, and isolation, creating a sad, somber ode to the coastal regions of the Bristol Channel. Traveling along the 20 miles of the world's longest tidal flats, Richmond meets people trying to find meaning and joy in life in small English towns. Beneath the casual images of food banks, punks, arcades, sex clubs, homeless shelters, and brand new houses lies a subtle anxiety that Richmond feels for his subjects. These tensions bubble just beneath the surface of the images, presenting a melancholic microcosm of post-austerity, post-Brexit Britain. The landscape of the Strait's cloud-covered, wide skies and the flat, rolling coastline combine to depict food poverty, isolation, commercial decline, housing instability, homelessness, unfulfilled desires and longings. Continuing a long lineage of British photographers who have incorporated poetry and lyricism into social documentaries, the photographer has captured the reality of the loneliness and desires of everyday life in a corner of southwest England through delicate colors and a sympathetic gaze.

Beneath everyday photographs of food banks, punks, pleasure arcades, swingers' clubs, shelters and new-build houses, Love Bites finds a waning unease to his subjects, a listless microcosm of post-austerity, post-Brexit Britain. Richmond allows these tensions to simmer on the surface: food poverty, isolation, commercial decline, housing precarity, homelessness, unfulfilled desire and longing mingle in the overcast, wide skies of the channel and its flat, spreading coastline.
