About the productJapanese

This is a collection of works by Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen. The book was designed by Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom, and the artist herself painted her handprint on the cover of each book, making the packaging almost an art object.
In 2018, the artist was invited to the Palace of Versailles in France to take photographs throughout the vast grounds and create this series. Over a period of six months, the artist freely photographed the palace's lavish gardens, gilded Baroque interiors, sculptures, and even Marie Antoinette's private letters, to create over 100 works. In particular, the artist was fascinated by the bodies represented in the many marble statues in the palace, and created hybrid works that play with concepts of sexuality and gender. The series also includes a poem written by Dutch novelist, poet, and playwright Marjolijn van Heemstra at the artist's request. The series of works alludes to the history of intrigue in court society.
