About the productJapanese

A collection of works breaking new ground that presents a pop perspective on the gradually expanding and monstrous human ego.

Murakami Takashi is one of the most dynamic artists in the contemporary art world, active worldwide in a wide range of fields. This book is a collection of works published in conjunction with the exhibition "Unfamiliar People: Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego," which is being held at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco from September 15, 2023 to February 12, 2024.

Born in an age of unprecedented environmental, political and social turmoil, these colorful monsters, with their compound eyes and sharp fangs, somehow provoke anxiety in the viewer. Takashi Murakami has created a variety of works using these creatures as representations of "rampant consumerism," "human depravity," and "the dangers of the high-speed digitalization of our world."

The book, which explores these contemporary themes through works from the past decade, is edited by Laura Allen, the museum's chief curator and curator of Japanese art, and features commentary by Ikegami Yuko, a professor of international cultural studies at Kobe University's Graduate School of International Culture who specializes in contemporary art, and Shiwa Masako, a world-renowned expert on digital art including NFT works.

With the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art's 90th anniversary commemorative exhibition "Murakami Takashi: Monsters, Kyoto" opening in February 2024, this book explores Murakami Takashi's current state, a work that is attracting even more attention today.
