A collection of works published in conjunction with an exhibition held in five cities around the world.
A collection of works by British artist David Hockney. As Covid-19 restrictions began to be implemented worldwide in early 2020, Hockney was living in isolation in his home and studio in Normandy, France. There, the artist created this work, further developing a series of works he first produced on his iPad in 2020. Inspired by his everyday observations, he immersed himself in the medium's unique immediacy, producing a large number of works depicting his home, the changing seasons, and the surrounding countryside. The work will travel to five cities, starting with an exhibition at Annely Juda Fine Art in London in November 2022, followed by Galerie Lelong & Co. in Paris, Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago, and LA Louver in Los Angeles, and concluding with an exhibition at Pace Gallery in New York from January to February 2023. This book is a collection of works published in conjunction with the series of exhibitions, and also includes an essay by Hockney himself.
Each gallery features 20 floral still lifes painted on an iPad and several landscapes as inkjet prints. The series reveals the artist's hand-drawn presence and the deliberate technique he employs to paint larger-than-life compositions. The flowers capture a sense of fleeting stillness, while the landscapes immerse the viewer in the vastness of the rural landscape in which he finds himself. The artist's unique sense of time and space, whether frozen in time or created from multiple perspectives, draws from examples across art history, from the Bayeux Tapestry and 17th-century Chinese scrolls to the still lifes of Henri Matisse.
One of the large photo-drawing works in the exhibition, "25th June 2022, Looking at the Flowers," was shown for the first time in this exhibition series. This work, which also serves as the cover of the book, depicts the artist sitting in an armchair, twice, looking at 20 still lifes of flowers displayed in a salon-style setting on a navy blue wall. Hockney's unique panoramas are like a self-portrait of the artist, and they draw the viewer into a world that seems familiar yet unfamiliar.
"It's photographic, but it's not your ordinary photograph.... I call it a 'photo-drawing', and it's a way of creating a more three-dimensional effect, because it has to be viewed over time, not like a photograph, where you see the whole thing at once.... I think most people think of photography as a way of depicting ultimate reality. They think that this is everything, that this is complete. But it's not. I'm convinced it's not. But not many people think of it that way." - David Hockney
