Domon Ken is a master who built the dawn of postwar Japanese photography. During his 44 years of artistic activity from 1935 until he collapsed from a cerebral thrombosis in 1979, he is best known for his life work, "Pilgrimage to Ancient Temples." This is a collection of five volumes of photographs he took over 30 years from the 1940s to the 1970s, visiting ancient temples all over Japan and photographing their scenery, architecture, and Buddhist statues.
This book features 170 carefully selected photographs of 25 temples, including their pagodas, gardens, and collections, as well as stone structures and stone Buddha statues. Included are 11 World Heritage temples, 40 national treasures, and 17 important cultural properties. Many of these are not normally open to the public.
