This photo book brings together the photographer Juergen Teller and creative director Dennis Friedman's long-term collaboration for W magazine and later for the luxury department store Barneys in New York. The most distinctive feature of this book is that Juergen Teller has photographed double-page spreads from catalogs for W magazine and Barneys from his archives from 1999 to 2016 and published them as is. This lo-fi approach emphasizes the physical process of looking back at past works, creating the illusion of being shown the archives in the artist's home.
Between 1999 and 2016, the pair released a series of iconic photographs captured in a realistic style. Shooting for W magazine, Teller consistently bucks the trend, resisting big-budget shoots in favour of authentic, anti-commercial narratives and stripped-down locations.
Teller and Friedman’s work for the Barneys catalogue, which took place between 2011 and 2016, also sees them take a risky approach in unusual locations such as Belgrade, Panama City and Tirana, showcasing playful photographic juxtapositions and unexpected scenarios in unfamiliar locations, with models and actors moving about in comical poses, creating a kind of unconventional advertising.
