About the productJapanese

This book is a collection of previously unpublished portraits taken by photographer Rob Hornstra during his trip to Chelyabinsk Oblast in south-central Russia in 2003.

Photographer Rob Hornstra traveled to the Chelyabinsk region in south-central Russia and published the photo book Communism & Cowgirls in 2003. Photographing the first generation of Russians to grow up influenced by Western culture after the decline of Communism, Communism & Cowgirls is a collection of intimate photographs taken mostly in people's homes.

When "Communism & Cowgirls" was published, the negatives of those chance encounters on the street were not selected, but remained untouched in his archives for many years. Now, almost 20 years later, Rob Hornstra has compiled these previously unpublished portraits in a new book, "THE UNKNOWN."

The film was shot in 2003, and the new post-Soviet generation was free to pursue personal growth in ways unthinkable to previous generations, yet unsure of what to do with the freedom they were suddenly given. They grew up with grandparents who still celebrated Lenin, and they lived and worked in architecture built by communism. True to the communist ethos, they campaigned against American capitalism, but they also drank Coca-Cola and wore the latest fashions as seen on MTV.

The events that have taken place in Russia over the past 20 years since the author's first visit there - from the assassinations of critical journalists, human rights activists and politicians to the invasion of Ukraine - give a certain sadness to the author's encounter at that time.
