In the 18th century, Kyoto during the Edo period, said to be an age of profusion of flowers, was dominated by Maruyama Okyo, who brought a new style of sketch painting to replace the previously mainstream Kano school, and established the Maruyama school. Goshun, who studied under Yosano Buson and also studied under Okyo, created the Shijo school, and the combined Maruyama-Shijo school had a major influence on the Kyoto art world, which has continued to influence modern Japanese painting.
This book features 124 works by 45 artists, including Okyo, Goshun, Takeuchi Seihō, and Uemura Shōen, including 12 Important Cultural Properties.
The opening feature is Daijoji Temple in Kasumi-cho, Hyogo Prefecture, which is home to the "Daijoji Sliding Door Paintings," the highlight of the exhibition and the greatest masterpiece from Okyo's final years, which is being shown for the first time in 10 years in Tokyo and 24 years in Kyoto, and introduces the entire space of the sliding doors that make up the three-dimensional mandala. At the same time, many close-ups of the 13 sliding door paintings, which feature a variety of styles, are also included. As a special feature, one side of the reception hall has been opened up to show the temple shining golden in the sunlight shining in, and the fantastical golden paintings floating up in the darkness as the sun sets.
The photos were taken by photographer Kazuyoshi Miyoshi. In the opening section, "Kyoto, Knowing the Age of Flowering Flowers," there is a map of Kyoto in the Edo period recreated by Edo researcher and illustrator Susumu Zenyoji. The map conveys the lively energy of the townspeople at the time.
This book tells you everything you need to know about the Maruyama and Shijo schools, spanning time and space from Kyoto 250 years ago to modern times!
