A photo collection by photographer Rinko Kawauchi. In April 2020, the author began photographing a swallow's nest she found near her home and the swallows raising their young there.
A swallow's nest built on the eaves, parent swallows flying in search of food. Baby birds opening their mouths as wide as they can in anticipation of their parent's return, plants sprouting, sunlight shining... The activities of life that continue unabated no matter the circumstances, and the photographer's photographs, capturing this simple strength as if quietly watching over them, seem to bring a moment of coolness and courage to those of us who are forced to live unsettled days under the various restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The book also includes a new essay by ornithologist Guilhem Lezaffer, "A Few Grams of Elegance," making it a fascinating read about the ecosystem of swallows.
