About the productJapanese

A collection of works by Okinawa-born photographer Mao Ishikawa. This book contains 80 black-and-white photographs, including unpublished works, centered on works from her debut work "Hot Days in Camp Hansen" (1982), taken between 1975 and 1977 in Koza City (now Okinawa City) and Kin Town, Okinawa Prefecture. This book, which captures the women working in the bars of Okinawa's military base towns, was produced with the artist's passionate feelings for women who enjoy their youth and love freedom as they please, at a time when the political background of Japan, Okinawa, and the United States was more complicated than it is these days. This book is composed of five chapters, including an essay written by the artist, and includes portraits of women gossiping about their boyfriends, going to work in a bar, relaxing with their boyfriends at home, having fun on the beach, and children who will support the future of Okinawa.

This book, shot in the mid-to-late 1970s, is an important early work that paved the way for Ishikawa to become a photographer. While the theme of Okinawa has been popular among famous Japanese photographers (Tomatsu Shomei, Moriyama Daido, Araki Nobuyoshi, Kitajima Keizo), Ishikawa is unique as a woman photographer who was born and raised in Okinawa and has continued to photograph the island energetically throughout her life.
