Unlike clearly defined spatial regions, 'karamarishiro', a word coined by Hirata, refers to a "fluffy tangle of gaps," that is, the overlapping of regions that can be said to be the side of all materials. This visual concept book unravels 21 architectural works that have shaped Hirata's own worldview through drawings, photographs, and text, from his early work "Masuya Main Store," the Architectural Institute of Japan award-winning "Ota Museum of Art & Library," the much-talked-about "Yatsushiro Civic Traditional Performing Arts Center," his latest work "HARAKADO," and the "Nerima Art Museum & Nukui Library," scheduled for completion in 2028.
