A collection of works by Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase. Highly regarded throughout history as one of the most important photobooks in the history of photography, photographer Masahisa Fukase's Crows was first published in 1986 and has since been reprinted twice, but both were limited editions and immediately sold out. This reprint follows the layout and design of the first edition and includes a new text by Tomo Kosuga of the Masahisa Fukase Archives. In recent years, the book cites many unpublished works and drawings by Fukase that were discovered by Tomo Kosuga, and explores the intersection of his unknown works and life. This memorable masterpiece series was shot between 1976 and 1986, starting with Fukase's journey home in the midst of grief following his separation from his wife. With the coastal scenery of Hokkaido as a backdrop, Fukase captures a flock of crows, exuding a sense of loneliness, in his mysterious photographs.
More than thirty years have passed since the original photobook version of Masahisa Fukase's work "Crows" was published, and it is now considered one of the definitive works in the history of photography, and is also considered one of the best in the field of photobooks. However, there is something that has been obscured and left behind by the acclaim and the passage of time. It is an interesting fragment of fact that explains the fundamental question of why Fukase became obsessed with the motif of crows. This motif of crows not only reflected the existential anguish and loneliness he endured throughout his life, but also amplified his loneliness by identifying himself with the crow in the name of art, and ultimately led him to fall into artistic expression full of madness. In 1992, Fukase fell down the stairs of his favorite bar. The aftereffects of this fell on his mind, and he remained in a medically isolated state for the next twenty years. Fukase becomes a crow, imprisoned by the camera he holds in his hands, and immortalized on the cover of his most representative photobook. - Tomo Kosuga (excerpt from the included essay "The Cry of Solitude")
