About the productJapanese

A tireless challenge in search of the origins of architecture - Tadao Ando's houses

Although Ando has traveled the world and undertaken large-scale projects in Europe, the US and the Middle East, he says that when he first established his office in 1969, he had no work and would come across vacant land and imagine imaginary projects. His first job was a friend's house, just 80m2 in size. It was also a small house called "Sumiyoshi Row House" in a row house district in Osaka that made Tadao Ando's name known to the world. Self-taught in architecture, with no mentor to consult with and always surrounded by anxiety, Ando continued to challenge the essence of architecture, even in small houses, and this attitude forms the core of the architect Tadao Ando is today. As he himself says in the essays in this book, "Houses are my origins" and "I have decided that my final project will be a house," houses have a special meaning to him.

This first volume of a collection of works by architect Tadao Ando focuses on the architect's origins, the house, and features 21 selected works, from his debut work "Tomishima House" to his latest work "House in Shiga." The book introduces Ando's works, including the "Sumiyoshi Row House," which caused controversy when it was announced due to its radical nature; the "Koshino House," a fashion designer's studio that marked a turning point for Ando; the "Rokko Housing Complex," built on a 60-degree steep slope and a difficult site; the "4x4 House," which created infinite space on a small site; and other overseas homes and ongoing projects, all presented with beautiful photographs and drawings. Each work is a powerful work that shows the architect's struggle to push himself to the limits.

While Ando has been working on projects for prestigious art museums around the world, such as the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Pinault Foundation, and the Pulitzer Institute of Art, he also continues to design small homes. Over the course of nearly 40 years, his strictness towards himself in architecture has not changed. We hope you will enjoy this book and its portrayal of his toughness in continuing to challenge his limits, his wealth of ideas in turning adversity into his advantage, his kindness in trying to provide more than residents expect, and his refined and beautiful worldview.
