Three years after Holz Bau, Gaden Publishing's second book focuses on American architecture, focusing on aluminum, the newest building material. The futuristic image of aluminum gradually took on a life of its own, starting with homes and skyscrapers that used aluminum, and eventually developed into roadside diners known as Googie architecture, and then into postmodern architecture. This book introduces 19 American buildings and four Japanese examples from the transition period from modern to postmodern, using photographs, drawings, illustrations, and cartoons.
The book also includes essays and interviews to deepen understanding of this diverse range of architecture. An essay by Gondo Tomoyuki of the University of Tokyo, who specializes in architectural production and construction methods. An interview with Lloyd Kahn, author of "Shelter" and editor of "Whole Earth Catalog." An interview with Victor Newlove, current partner of Ahmee Davis, a leading Googie architect. A roundtable discussion with Seng Kuan of the University of Tokyo and Harvard University, who specializes in architectural history. A roundtable discussion with architect Tsukamoto Yoshiharu. Through dialogue with a variety of people, the book seeks to get closer to this elusive architecture.
