What is Wipe Lacquer?
This is the simplest lacquer art technique, in which raw lacquer (the sap of the lacquer tree) is rubbed into wooden bases such as chopsticks and bowls, and then repeatedly wiped off to create a glossy finish.
By applying multiple coats of raw lacquer, you can enjoy the beauty of the wood grain and create tableware with a natural look.
Lacquer is the world's oldest natural paint, made by refining sap extracted from the trunks of lacquer trees.
It is a precious gift from nature; only about one milk bottle's worth of sugar can be harvested from a 10- to 15-year-old mature tree.
It is said to increase the durability and antiseptic properties of the material, as well as provide excellent antibacterial properties; its durability is such that lacquerware made during the Jomon period can still be excavated today without any corrosion.
By carefully applying layers of raw lacquer with wiped lacquer, you can create a durable, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind piece of lacquerware.
Approximate amount of lacquer needed for wiping lacquer
1 pair of chopsticks - approx. 4g
1 bowl (diameter 11cm) - approx. 12g
1 flat plate (diameter 17cm) - approx. 10g
■Before you purchase
We use natural lacquer and no synthetic resins (we use turpentine oil to dilute the lacquer and wash brushes).
※About lacquer rash
Lacquer may cause a rash depending on your constitution and physical condition.
When working, minimize exposed skin and wear gloves.
Please note that the seller and manufacturer will not take any responsibility for any lacquer rash.
The severity of the rash varies from person to person. If you experience a severe rash, we recommend that you see a medical specialist.
■ Creator
Tsutsumi Asakichi Lacquer Shop
Founded in 1909, this lacquer raw materials store handles all the refining, mixing and sales of lacquer in-house.
We provide lacquer to lacquer artists and craftsmen nationwide, as well as to the restoration of various national treasures and important cultural properties, including Nikko Toshogu Shrine. We have the largest share in the handling of Japanese lacquer. We have developed our own highly dispersed refined lacquer, "Korin."
Feeling a sense of crisis about the recent decline in demand for lacquer, in 2016 he launched the lacquer promotion activity "Urushi no Ippo."
In 2019, the "BEYOND TRADITION" project was launched to convey the appeal of lacquer as a sustainable material and to close the gap between people and lacquer.
We communicate new values and possibilities of lacquer, such as lacquer x SURF, lacquer x SKATE, and lacquer x BMX.
Winner of the 3rd Mitsui Golden Takumi Award.
