The hard nuts inside are a favorite food of squirrels. Most of the nuts that are brought to their nests are eaten, but the forgotten nuts sprout in the spring. This is how the Japanese walnut carries its seeds far and wide.
Its shell is thicker and harder than that of the commonly known walnut. Because the shell is so hard, it is crushed and mixed into studless tires to be used as a slip-resistant material.

The cube contains the kernels after the shells have been cracked and the cotyledons removed.
