Watanabe Seitei, who was active from the Meiji to Taisho periods, travelled to Europe and America for the Paris World's Fair in 1878, where he interacted with Impressionist painters including Degas. His delicate flower and bird paintings, which combine Japanese sentiment with Western realism, were subsequently highly acclaimed in Europe and America at solo exhibitions in London and other venues, and his works are now in the collections of renowned European and American art museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the British Museum.
Although he was active in Japan, producing the original drawings for the cloisonné paintings at the Akasaka Palace State Guest House, he kept his distance from the central art world and has not been looked upon much since. However, in recent years there has been a growing momentum for him to be reevaluated.
This is the official guidebook for the exhibition "Watanabe Seitei: Flower and Bird Paintings that Captivated Europe and America", which has been held at the Tokyo University of the Arts Art Museum in Ueno since March 27, 2021.
