Specification Saul Leiter Centennial Retrospective
Special edition celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth
Published in 8 countries around the world!

Saul Leiter (1923-2013) took photographs and painted every day until just before his death at the age of 89, leaving behind a vast body of work. His source of inspiration was just a few blocks from his apartment on East 10th Street in Manhattan, and as a genius who found beauty in ordinary places, his worldview, capturing the streets of New York in color, is attracting widespread attention today.
On the other hand, his work as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in the 1960s and 1970s, his black and white landscapes, his "intimate portrait" nudes, and his painted nude photographs were rarely published during his lifetime.
This book, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Leiter's birth, is a definitive collection of Saul Leiter's works that draws on the vast archives managed by the Saul Leiter Foundation to bring to light the diversity of his expression, the source of his prototypes, and his complete picture, making full use of valuable materials such as unpublished works, contact sheets, and a photographic chronology of his life.

[About the Author]
Saul Leiter
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1923, he began painting and taking photographs in his teens. His paintings were highly praised at exhibitions. In 1946, he moved to New York, where he continued to paint and focused on commercial photography to make a living. In 1957, he began his career as a fashion photographer, working for magazines such as Esquire and Harper's Bazaar for 20 years. He started out working in black and white, but eventually began working in color as well. While he was busy traveling around as a popular commercial photographer, he also continued to take street photos. Most of his work was taken in downtown Manhattan, where he lived. In 2006, his first photo book, Early Color, was published by Steidl, and his talent, which had already mastered color photography in the late 1940s, began to attract widespread attention. Amid growing reevaluation, he passed away in New York in 2013. Since his death, exhibitions have been held in art museums around the world, and many photo books have been published.

Margit Erb
Founder and director of the Saul Leiter Foundation. From 1996 until Leiter's death in 2013, she served as Leiter's agent at the Howard Greenberg Gallery, and had a close relationship with him both professionally and privately. She was involved in all of Leiter's books, both during his lifetime and after his death, including "Early Color," "In My Room" (Steidl Publishing), and "Saul Leiter: A Guide to the Life of Saul Leiter" (Seigensha), and is co-producer of the documentary film "Saul Leiter: 13 Lessons Learned from a Slow Life," filmed in 2013. Currently, together with her husband, Michael Parillo, she maintains and manages the extensive archives stored in Leiter's studio.

Michael Parillo
Co-director of the Saul Leiter Foundation. After a 20-year career as an editor and music and lifestyle journalist, he joined the foundation in 2015. He has edited many books about Leiter, including "All About Saul Leiter," "The Unseen Saul Leiter" (Seigensha), and "The Eternal Saul Leiter" (Shogakukan). Together with his wife Margit Erb, he edits a digital catalog of Leiter's work.
