Official catalogue of the exhibition that looks at what Mingei is, its spread, present and future

Mingei, or folk crafts, was advocated by the philosopher Yanagi Muneyoshi about 100 years ago.
This exhibition unravels the themes of Mingei (folk art) under the theme of "food, clothing, and shelter," and displays approximately 150 beautiful Mingei items that have been used in daily life. This is the official catalogue for the exhibition "Mingei - Beauty in Life," which also visits the areas where Mingei is still produced today, and introduces the makers who work there and the handicrafts that have been handed down through the generations.

The 232-page book is packed with commentary for each exhibited work, and includes many images taken specifically for the exhibition. It also includes interviews with artists from five areas famous for their craftsmanship, complete with beautiful photographs.
Also worth reading is the discussion between Terry Ellis/Keiko Kitamura (MOGI Folk Art Director), who has long worked as a buyer for BEAMS and played a major role in the current folk art boom, and Takuji Hamada (exhibition supervisor).
The cover features the Ainu checkered pattern, one of the original designs of Yao Washi Katsuragisha, a paper maker that makes all of its products by hand, printed in a color exclusive to the catalogue.
