What are the premises and how is education and research in fashion as a representational culture, or in fashion design as clothing design, currently being practiced in Japan? This issue's special feature, "Fashion Education, Research, and Criticism," begins with a discussion on critically grasping the past, present, and future of education and research surrounding fashion.
During the Meiji period, Western-style sewing education spread throughout the country through institutions such as Women's Higher Normal Schools, forming the foundation for postwar dressmaking culture, and this legacy has helped develop Japan's fashion culture.
But how has the culture of criticism and research, which explores "possible" possibilities and values that are not intended to drive the "current" fashion system, developed? Why is it that, even though fashion has always been à la mode, so many people reject the fusion of fashion with "technology," which also seeks to be à la mode? What kind of education, research, and criticism are currently possible for us to grasp the expansion of fashion as a medium for generating new body images?
As the complexity of "design" has become a hot topic in recent years, new critical spaces, research practices, and experimental education have begun to emerge on the fringes of the fashion industry. This issue's special feature aims to shed light on these trends from a variety of angles, and includes interviews with Shigeaki Arai, Masato Inoue, Cecilia Raspanti, and Dehlia Hannah, as well as anonymous roundtable discussions with people currently involved in the fashion industry.
In addition, we have created a book guide as a special feature for this issue. We have selected a wide range of reference texts, both books and papers, from fashion history to wearable technology. In addition, in the regular articles and essays, we have published texts by Yoko Fujishima, Yuji Kano, Yuki Namba, Kazuya Kawasaki, Karen Itokazu, Shihoko Anzai, and our editor, Tomoya Ota, in an attempt to continue building a foundation for fashion criticism from multiple angles.
We hope that this magazine will serve as an opportunity to deepen thought about fashion, research, education, and criticism.
