About the productJapanese

"How long will the somewhat fruitless question of 'Is fashion art?' continue to be asked?" Such a question is the starting point of this issue's special feature, "Fashion, Design, and Art."
If we take a broad definition of art, with painting, sculpture, design, film, manga, crafts, etc. as its subcategories, then fashion would of course be one of those subcategories. However, if we understand art in the narrow sense as fine art, such as painting and sculpture, then it goes without saying that fashion is different.

However, fashion and fine art are not completely unrelated.
In Europe and the United States, there have been a number of exhibitions examining the relationship between fashion and fine art in the 20th century, and one could say that they have kept an eye on each other. On the other hand, fashion - or more precisely, fashion design - is also a field of design. However, it is also true that fashion differs from other fields of design in many ways, such as the nature of the industry and business practices.

In this issue, while we assume that fashion, design, and art are each independent genres, we will attempt to examine from various perspectives how these fields are currently forming relationships.
The interview features three speakers: fashion designer Ono Tomomi, who studied aesthetics at Tokyo University of the Arts; playwright Fujita Takahiro, who often collaborates with fashion designers and stylists; and designer/artist Fukuhara Shiho, who is also involved in the development of Google's "Project Jacquard."
The essays include texts by Yuna Tonegawa, who sheds light on the significance of the aforementioned exhibition on fashion and art, and by Yosuke Takahashi and Kazuya Kawasaki, who explore the new trend of biofashion. In addition, the book and exhibition introductions also feature themes that resonate with this special feature.

We do not aim to impose our editors' views or provide definitive answers, but if we can only provide an opportunity for readers to form their own views then we can say that our goal has been achieved.

We hope that this magazine will serve as an opportunity to deepen your thoughts about fashion, design, and art.
