About the productJapanese

"My journey around the isolated islands of the north has finally come to an end." (Photographer Atsushi Okada)

Yururi is an uninhabited island with a circumference of 8 kilometers, located off the coast of the Nemuro Peninsula, the easternmost point of the Japanese mainland. The reason why this island is an uninhabited island where only horses live and landing is prohibited is deeply connected to the history of Hokkaido, which continues from the development, through the last war, and up to the present day. (From the article)

This is a photo book by photographer Atsushi Okada, who has been taking pictures of the "phantom island" for over 10 years, documenting the appearances and landscapes of disappearing creatures, more than half a century after humans stopped living on the island, where only horses live.

It was in 1950 that people came to Yururi Island with their horses in search of a place to dry their kelp. After more than 20 years, in 1971, the last islander left the island, and Yururi Island became uninhabited again. In 2006, as the aging of the islanders made it difficult to manage the horses, the male horses were removed from the island, and the island's horses were destined to slowly disappear. When Okada first visited the island in the summer of 2011, there were 12 horses, but they gradually disappeared, and by 2024, only two will remain.
