The long-awaited culmination of Fukase Masahisa's work.
Forty years in pursuit of individuality and play.
Photographer Masahisa Fukase was active at the forefront of Japanese photography since the 1960s. However, an unexpected accident in 1992 put an end to his work. While "Crow" is remembered as a timeless masterpiece, the majority of his other works have lost opportunities to be introduced.
This book takes a bird's-eye view of the enigmatic photographer Fukase's 40-year career, shedding light for the first time on the full scope of his photographic expression.
Born into a family that ran a photography studio in Hokkaido, he used a wide range of techniques to explore photographic expression rooted in the perspectives of "personality" and "play." Photography was always at the center of his life, but his inner libido involved those around him and even led his own life to ruin.
This first definitive edition of the series arranges each work in chronological order, painstakingly illustrating the intentions and background behind each work through the after-photographs and notes that Fukase left in magazines in 26 chapters. Fukase's works, which have only been seen in fragments until now, emerge as a trajectory, and the book seeks to explore in essence what he was trying to see through his camera throughout his life.
At the end of the book, there is a chronology and major magazine contributions. This is a large volume filled with the richness and power of photographic expression, and can be handed down to the future.
I would also like to add that the owner of this dark, turbulent gaze is also the owner of a surprisingly warm smile in everyday life.
