A collection of works by French conceptual artist Sophie Calle.
Published in 2018 and quickly going out of print, BECAUSE has now been re-released in an expanded edition with six new stories and seven new photographs.

This film is the story that happened before the shutter was released, and also the story that happened in my head when the idea first occurred.
The book opens with the word 'Because': the photograph only becomes apparent as it emerges from between the pages, reversing the natural primacy that has developed between image and accompanying words, and calling attention to the influence that words have on our perception of photographs.

This book has been reprinted in conjunction with the exhibition "Sophie Calle: Overshare," which will run from October 2024 to January 2025 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, and from March to June 2025 at the Orange County Museum of Art in Costa Mesa, California.
